Vinings is a little census-designated place in Cobb County, GA. It lies just across the Chattahoochee River from Atlanta.
Vinings was originally known as Crossroads, and then Paces, after Hardy Pace, who operated Pace’s Ferry across the Chattahoochee River. Paces Ferry Road remains the main east-west road through Vinings.
In the 1840s the Western and Atlantic Railroad laid rail tracks from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Atlanta. At this point, Vinings became a construction station for the railroad and was renamed after William H. Vining, who worked on the construction of “Vining’s Bridge” for the railroad.
The railroad is still in existence today and is leased to CSX.
During the Civil War, the Union Army occupied Vinings. The little town recovered after the war and was officially recognized as a community in 1904. Vinings has never been incorporated as a city, though leaders have discussed becoming a “township.”
Today, Vinings covers 3.23 square miles of land and is home to well over 12,000 people.
