The Johns Creek area was originally inhabited by Cherokee Indians. In the 19th century, trading posts began to appear along the Chattahoochee River, and some of these trading posts became small communities where settlers gathered to visit and sell crops. 

Eventually, the Cherokees were forced out of the area due to the discovery of gold in northeast Georgia and white settlers took over. 

In 1981, a group of graduates from the Georgia Institute of Technology bought 1,700 acres of land in the present-day Johns Creek area. They planned a high-tech office park on this land, and over the years the development grew into the community of Johns Creek. 

Today, Johns Creek is the 10th largest city in Georgia and a suburb of Atlanta. It has a population of over 82,000 people and covers 31.34 square miles of land. 

The Johns Creek Chamber of Commerce hopefully states: 

Johns Creek is known for its vibrant neighborhoods, the majority of which have been developed since the 1980s. For many years, the area was a rural farming community.

Though a new municipality, the City of Johns Creek has already begun to identify steps we can take to try to achieve sustainability throughout our municipal services and operations.
