Preparing Your Belongings for Storage

2 - min read

Storage units can be used for a multitude of reasons. Your home could be up for sale, and you need to store unnecessary items so that it shows better to potential buyers. You may even have too much furniture for your new place, but you aren’t ready to part with it yet. Oftentimes, you just need more space! Keeping your things in a storage facility is a great way to keep them safe and out of the way for as long as you need. In order to get the most out of your storage space, there are a few things you’ll need to do to prepare your items for their temporary home.

1) Know What You Can Store

Some storage facilities have restrictions on the types of items that you’re allowed to store. But in general, it’s safe to store anything that is unlikely to move or fall over. Things like couches, chairs, books and mattresses are usually suitable. As long as they’re kept at an appropriate temperature, these items can typically be stored for as long as necessary with little or no change in their condition.

Perishable or combustible items like food, fuels and fireworks are not safe to store. These items pose a significant threat of danger to your unit as well as the surrounding ones. Even plants are not suitable for storage as these spaces provide neither sunlight, water nor fresh air. If you’re still uncertain and would like to know whether or not something will be accepted, contact us with a description of the item(s) and we’ll have an answer for you!

2) Understand Weight Limits

Managing weight is one of the most important parts of storing your things. You should understand the strength of each container you intend to send to our Atlanta storage facility, including how much it can hold and how much can be placed on top of it.

As a good rule of thumb, cardboard boxes can usually hold somewhere between 20 and 120 pounds, depending on the strength of the box. Each box should have a maximum weight limit printed somewhere on it, so use that as your guide when selecting and packing them. In addition, be sure that your boxes are properly taped up. Lighter boxes only need a single piece of tape across the openings, but heavier boxes should have the sides of the flaps taped for added strength.

4) Label Everything

Each item you store should be clearly labelled with your name (or that of your company) and either a description of the contents or some kind of code. For example, if you’re storing boxes of seasonal decorations, you may want to label them “Winter Decor.”, “Summer Decor.” and so on.

In addition to labeling each container, you should write up a list that clearly specifies what is in each container you have. You can check this list before you visit our Atlanta storage facility to figure out where something is or where it should go. When you no longer need to store things with us, you can check the list to see which boxes you should unpack first and which can be left for another time.
